How can a dentist treat sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is caused by the base of the tongue falling back and blocking the airway. By making a mouthpiece that moves the lower jaw forward, you can open the airway, similar to the jaw thrust maneuver we all learned in CPR. In many cases, this can eliminate the need for a CPAP machine- less restrictive to the wearer, and less noisy for bed-mates!
